Hillside Dentistry Bis-phosphonate Information

Many of our patients have been diagnosed with osteoporosis.  Due to the various risks involved with osteoporosis Bisphosphonate drugs are often used to protect against fracture and continued bone loss.  Like many drugs there are risks and side effects that should be considered by those taking Bisphosphonates. A major dental consideration is a condition known as Osteonecrosis of the jaw.   This often arises when a patient has a tooth extracted.  It is often a painful destructive disease that is quite difficult to treat. Here is a common list of oral drugs that would fall in this category:  Actonel, Boniva, Fosamax, Fosamax Plus D, Skelid & Didronel.  Intravenous drugs include:  Aredia, Zometa, Bonefos. It should be noted that Intravenous Bisphosphonates carry a much greater risk for developing Osteonecrosis of the jaw than oral.
Although the risk of developing Osteonecrosis of the jaw is small, it should be considered a risk.  Prevention becomes imperative for those who are most concerned with this possible complication.  The ADA suggests comprehensive exams, excellent home care, and consistent recall appointments.
